In Loving Memory of Mrs. Laura Tompkins

It is with heavy hearts that the Auxiliary to the Medico-Chirurgical Society of DC announces the passing of one of our own.

Laura Hutchinson Tompkins — known affectionately to family as “Rusty” — passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the age of 95. Born and raised in Washington, DC to Grace and Ellsworth Hutchinson Sr., she graduated from Dunbar High School and went on to attend Howard University.

Mrs. Tompkins was a true cornerstone of the Auxiliary, serving as President of AMCS of DC from 1964–1966 and again from 1978–1980. She was a lifetime member of both the Auxiliary to the National Medical Association and the Auxiliary to the Medico-Chirurgical Society of Washington, DC, and served as president of each. Her civic service extended well beyond the Auxiliary, including board roles with the Jefferson Townhouse Corporation, the Washington Hearing and Speech Society, St. Anselm’s Abbey School, and the GW Hospital Women’s Board.

She met her husband, Dr. William G. Tompkins, while they were both in high school, and the two married in 1951. Mrs. Tompkins is survived by her children Lornel G. Tompkins, MD, William G. Tompkins Jr., Brett A. Tompkins, and Lisa Tompkins Brown; five grandchildren; two godchildren; her longtime sister-in-law and fellow AMCS member Alice T. Davis; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was predeceased by her husband of 25 years, her parents, and her brothers.

Visitation and funeral services were held Friday, June 26, 2026 at Kingdom Fellowship A.M.E. Church, with interment following at Maryland National Memorial Park in Laurel, MD. The family has suggested that memorial gifts be directed to the GW Hospital Women’s Board, the Auxiliary to the Medico-Chirurgical Society of DC, or Kingdom Fellowship AME Church.
